Founded in 2010, WOOD studio is a collaborative practice rooted in the desire to design and build authentic architecture — work that is beautifully simple in composition and wonderfully complex in experience. The work spans scales and typologies: home renovations, modular design, pre-approved accessory dwelling units, theatrical set design, custom furniture, multi-unit apartment buildings, a reentry center for people committing to turning their lives around. What connects them isn’t building type. It’s the belief that architecture is one of the more direct ways to serve a community.
That belief shows up in the projects they have taken on professionally. The firm has worked with nonprofits, mission-driven developers, and families building something that will outlast them. The clients are different. The commitment is the same.
Barrett studied architecture at the University of Virginia before relocating to Seattle with Amy in 2008. He spent fifteen years at HYBRID Architecture before committing to WOOD studio full time. Amy’s background spans both architecture and landscape architecture, with roots at UVA where she also taught before moving to Seattle. Together they bring a range of experience that shows up in the work: buildings that are carefully designed, honestly detailed in response to their site and purpose.
The work carries the marks of real craft and an understanding of materials. Each project is rooted in the history of its site, answers the needs of the people living with it now, and is built with the quality to hold up for years to come.
